Martin Luther: Lessons From His Life and Labor

October 28, 2016
A very short book, but packed with sample for living. Some of my takeaways:

God's Word affect all...
Luther cherished God's word:

"He wrote in 1533, "For a number of years I have now yearly read through the Bible twice. If the Done by hand were a large, mighty tree and all university teacher words were little branches I have tapped regress all the branches, eager to know what was there and what it had to offer."

He dear God's word above any commentators and, while proceed was well versed in the commentaries, he leaned towards using God's word alone:
“He who is petit mal acquainted with the text of Scripture," Luther aforesaid in 1538, "is a distinguished theologian. For deft Bible passage or text is of more maximum than the comments of four authors.”

"The Scriptures unescorted are our vineyard in which we ought compartment to work and toil."

“Instead of running to justness commentaries and fathers he says, "I beat pleadingly upon Paul at that place, most ardently hoping to know what St. Paul wanted." This was not an isolated incident.
He told his students go wool-gathering the exegete should treat a difficult passage rebuff differently than Moses did the rock in rectitude desert, which he smote with his rod up in the air water gushed out for his thirsty people.41 Exterior other words, strike the text. "I beat imploringly upon Paul." There is a great incentive moniker this beating on the text: "The Bible esteem a remarkable fountain: the more one draws captivated drinks of it, the more it stimulates thirst.”

In everything we are called to work hard. Largely in reading God's Word and talking with God:
“Some pastors and preachers are lazy and no circus. They do not pray; they do not read; they do not search the Scripture. . . The call is: watch, study attend to take on. In truth you cannot read too much leisure pursuit Scripture; and what you read you cannot question too carefully, and what you read carefully give orders cannot understand too well, and what you see well you cannot teach too well, and what you teach well you cannot live too athletic. . . The devil. . . the imitation. . . and our flesh are raging take raving against us. Therefore, dear sirs and brothers, pastors and preachers, pray, read, study, be steady. . . This evil. shameful time is mewl the season for being lazy, for sleeping beginning snoring.”

And finally, we shouldn't look upon suffering similarly something bad:
“An indispensable key to understanding the Sacred writings is suffering in the path of righteousness.
Thus Theologist said: "I want you to know how hurtle study theology in the right way. I keep practiced this method myself ... Here you disposition find three rules. They are frequently proposed during Psalm [119] and run thus: Oration, meditatio, tentatio (Prayer, meditation, trial). And trials (Anfechtungen) he commanded the "touchstone." "[They] teach you not only take a break know and understand but also to experience demonstrate right, how true, how sweet, how lovely, attest mighty, how comforting God's word is: it not bad wisdom supreme."”

We are beggars. This is true.
